Funchal is built on a volcano

Madeira was formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, and you can still see it everywhere in Funchal: black basalt cliffs, lava rock pools filled by the Atlantic, small grottos worn into the shore and tunnels cut through solid rock.

Many of these spots are hidden along the shore and easy to walk straight past. Our tuk-tuk tours take you to the best of them in one easy trip, with a local driver who knows when the sea is calm and the light is right.

FAQ

Volcanic caves in Funchal: common questions

Are there volcanic caves in Funchal?

Yes. Funchal is built on volcanic rock, and its coastline hides natural lava pools, small sea grottos and a tunnel cut through the volcanic cliff. Several of them are easy to miss unless you know exactly where to look.

Where exactly are the volcanic caves in Funchal?

They are spread along the Funchal coastline, and the best ones are not signposted. On a TukTukRides.pt tuk-tuk tour your local driver takes you straight to them, with no hills to climb and no parking to find.

Can I swim in the volcanic pools?

Yes, when the sea is calm. Bring swimwear, a towel and water shoes for the volcanic rock. Your guide will tell you on the day whether conditions are safe.

Can I visit them in winter?

Yes, the volcanic coast can be visited all year. Madeira stays mild in winter, though some spots close when the sea is rough, so tours are planned around the conditions on the day.

Can I visit the volcanic caves on a tuk-tuk tour?

Yes. TukTukRides.pt runs tuk-tuk tours around Funchal that stop at the lava pools, grottos and volcanic viewpoints. Book online or send a WhatsApp message to plan your route.

How much does the volcanic caves tour cost?

Prices are per person, with a minimum of 2 people: €35 for the 1-hour volcanic cave tour, €45 for 1.5 hours with a full city tour, and €57 for 2 hours with a tasting and viewpoints. A 3rd guest in the same tuk-tuk is +€20. Pick-up anywhere in Funchal and at the cruise port is free.

What happens if it rains or the sea is rough?

Light rain is common in Madeira and passes quickly, so tours usually go ahead. If the sea is too rough for the pools or grottos, your driver adapts the route to the volcanic spots that are safe that day. If the weather makes the tour impossible, contact us to move it to another day.

I am on a cruise. Can I do the tour during my stop in Funchal?

Yes. Pick-up at the cruise port is free and your driver meets you at the port gate. Tell us your all-aboard time when you book and we plan the route around it.

What should I bring?

Water shoes or sandals with grip for the volcanic rock, swimwear, a towel, sun cream and a camera.
